Swans

I was inspired by swans, both white and black, for my project. Many people don’t associate elegance with the color black, but they associate “basic”, or “boring”. White is more often seen as “pretty” and “pure”. Black is one of my absolute favorite colors, as much as it isn’t a color but a shade. The black swan’s pattern is variations on damasks, lace, and florals. They are the epitome of elegance to many, their patterns intricate and beautiful. Though swans, and many birds, are beautiful in their own right, I wanted to showcase how absolutely beautiful black could be. Initially, I wanted to make something with wings or feathers. Birds are one of my favorite creatures, as much as I like every animal, birds will always be one of my favorites. Feathers ended up being extremely difficult to construct, and because of that, wings were as well. The wings of the swans ended up more abstract, just the shape and general idea of a wing.

Swans are very pretty birds, and using the two colors swans come in I was able to create a duality between white and black. When I decided to go with this, I posed the two swans differently to fully show the differences between the two. Both being swans, however, they also have their similarities. The black swan is in a swimming pose, facing downward, while the white is in a flight pose and is facing upward. Not only can the black swan be a shadow of the white, but they can be one in the same. They both are made with the same basic structure. The birds are intentionally somewhat abstracted, so their movements could be more interpreted by the viewer.
